Peta Murgatroyd Bra Selfie Reminds Us Post-Baby Body Expectations Are Ridiculous

The “post-baby body” obsession has, unfortunately, seemingly taken over our culture. Instead of marveling at the fact that women bring forth life from their very bodies, all too often we see stories about how women do or do not look while they’re recovering. UGH.

Which is why we’re loving the fact that Dancing with the Stars performer Peta Murgatroyd posted a picture of her post-baby body to remind us that having six-pack abs or a super toned body a mere few weeks (or frankly, months or years) after giving birth is, frankly, ridiculous and totally unrealistic.

We love it when new moms with public platforms speak up about this particularly irksome issue. Because all too often us non-celebs end up feeling completely inadequate when we’re not living up to a standard that — it turns out — is insane and not realistically achievable.

Here’s the post:

Real life: I took this photo 8 days post birth. I left the hospital looking 5 months pregnant. Many people think a woman should shrink right back to her pre-birth weight immediately. That is just not the truth for most,” she wrote.

Murgatroyd also stressed the need for patience when it comes to getting her body back to where she wants it — because health and recovery take time and should never be rushed.

ONE THOUSAND YESES! And also, thank you, Peta. We’re confident this post will help so many women feeling body shamed for the very natural, normal, and beautiful state of their post-baby bodies.

And in case you missed it, Murgatroyd just had her first child with her fiancé and fellow Dancing with the Stars dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy. And, just, awwww.

Costars falling in love and starting a family?! This is truly our ultimate fan fantasy, and we’re genuinely so stoked for the happy family. Congrats, guys!
