Daisy Ridley, best known for playing Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is also a force for body positivity on Instagram, with posts documenting the sometimes deceptive nature of social media and calling on us to embrace ourselves just as we are. Revealing her daily battle with resulting skin complications from endometriosis, she’s refreshingly candid about her struggles with confidence.

At 15 I was diagnosed with endometriosis. One laparoscopy, many consultations and 8 years down the line, pain was back (more mild this time!) and my skin was THE WORST. I've tried everything: products, antibiotics, more products, more antibiotics) and all that did was left my body in a bit of a mess. Finally found out I have polycycstic ovaries and that's why it's bad. I can safely say feeling so self conscious has left my confidence in tatters. I hate wearing make up but I currently don't want to leave the house without it on. HOWEVER PROGRESS IS BEING MADE! (With some help from a dermatologist and cutting out dairy (waah, except for spontaneous ice creams) and cutting down sugar (bigger waah but gotta do what you've gotta do)). Finally. Finally. (Throughout all this I've only had people being wonderful and encouraging and occasionally making me realise I'm being ridiculous and there's more to life)... My point is, to any of you who are suffering with anything, go to a doctor; pay for a specialist; get your hormones tested, get allergy testing; keep on top of how your body is feeling and don't worry about sounding like a hypochondriac. From your head to the tips of your toes we only have one body, let us all make sure ours our working in tip top condition, and take help if it's needed. #wasthispostlongenough #maybethesehashtagscanbulkitupabit #alsohowmanybracketsdoesonewomanneed #ifyourereadingthisiapplaudyou #thisisaclaymaskincaseyourewondering

At 15 I was diagnosed with endometriosis. One laparoscopy, many consultations and 8 years down the line, pain was back (more mild this time!) and my skin was THE WORST (…) I can safely say feeling so self-conscious has left my confidence in tatters. HOWEVER PROGRESS IS BEING MADE!”

She’s also not afraid to call out the carefully edited existence and double-edged sword of social media:

“Social media is great but also a bit scary cause what people post is the most filtered, most carefully chosen and cleverly edited moments of their lives. And self-esteem is a huge issue for people around the world.”

And in a recent Instagram post – a Snap of her lip singing with a filter that shows a flawless appearance – is something we definitely relate to:

“I mean I LOVE the snap chat filters but do you ever use them and then the filter clicks off and every hope you had that you were suddenly flawless goes away?! (…) But I actually do love myself, I try to think good thoughts always and am surrounded by the most wonderful people, so I’m keeping it balanced (like the Force, obvs).”

Ugh, we so relate. With Snapchat filters making us look like flawless glamazons, it can sometimes be a challenge to love the face we see after the filter clicks off. Yet it’s good to remember that we’re we’re still beautiful as we are, whether or not we’re using a filter, freckles and all.
