Daisy Ridley has defended the right of Star Wars fans to criticise The Last Jedi.

The actor, who played Rey in the movie as well as The Force Awakens and upcoming Rise of Skywalker, said so to USA Today during an interview.

Rian Johnson’s first contribution to the Star Wars saga was received pretty badly by one quadrant of the fandom who aggressively dismissed the movie online.

Ridley says she wasn’t “surprised” by the backlash.

“It’s just a different thing,” she said. "Everyone’s going to have an opinion now anyway on the internet, but I also think it’s fair."

"If people hold something incredibly dear and think they know how it should be and it's not like that,” she added. “It’s fair for people to think they were done wrong.”

However, as much as the actor believes people have a right to their opinion she says it is still Rian Johnson’s movie and their criticism doesn’t mean they were correct.

"Ultimately, Rian’s a filmmaker and one person can’t dictate how a film is supposed to be,” Ridley said, “but freedom of expression, sure."

The British star’s career was launched after being cast by J.J. Abrams as the lead in the newest Star Wars trilogy and she has said that Episode IV will likely be her last as Rey.

“I can’t actually imagine it right now,” Ridley told Vulture when asked if she would return to the role after the release of the next film. ‘The ending to Rise of Skywalker … it’s very satisfying.

“It felt like an end. I don’t know what’ll happen in however many years. There are so many characters in the Star Wars world who’ve never been explored...so right now, I don’t think so.’

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on 19th December
