Curtains close for Star Cineplex

All five Star Cineplex locations in East Malaysia have ceased operations


Star Cineplex ceases operations for good.

29 Sep – Cinema exhibitor Star Cineplex has confirmed the closure of all five of its cinema locations in East Malaysia.

They are; Star Cineplex Kuching, Star Cineplex Miri, Star Cineplex Bintulu, Star Cineplex Sibu in Sarawak and Star Cineplex Sandakan in Sabah.

Earlier this year saw to the closure of Star Cineplex Miri, followed by Star Cineplex Kuching on 3rd May 2016.

On 30th June 2016, the closure of Star Cineplex Sibu was announced.

Following the closure, the cinema had conducted a weekend market sales, selling of items like cinema seats, projectors, movie posters and banners, as well as movie merchandise.

When contacted by Cinema Online, a representative of the cinema had explained that the closures was due to the stiff competition faced from other bigger cinema chains in the area thus making it difficult for Star Cineplex to sustain their business.

Established since 1997, Star Cineplex is also the family business of filmmaker Bjarne Wong.

Current cinemas in Sarawak are; TGV Cinemas Vivacity, MBO Spring Mall, LFS Riverside Kuching, LFS Summer Mall and GSC CityONE in Kuching, while in Miri there is TGV Cinemas Imperial City and GSC Bintang Megamall.

Meanwhile in Sabah, there is MBO Imago Kota Kinabalu, GSC Suria Sabah, GSC 1Borneo, Megalong Cineplex Penampang, Growball Center Point KK, City Cineplex KK in Kota Kinabalu, LFS Harbour Mall in Sandakan and Eastern Cineplex in Tawau.
