Roy Hodgson’s side will be back here at the weekend, but things did not fall for them here. In the 19th minute, debutant Dean Henderson had to leave the pitch he used to call his own as the ex-United goalkeeper was replaced by Sam Johnstone after suffering an injury.
Within two minutes, United were ahead through Alejandro Garnacho, and it was 2-0 when Casemiro headed past Johnstone from a corner.
Anthony Martial wrapped up the fully deserved United win when he passed Casemiro’s long pass coolly past Johnstone, who made a couple of late saves to ensure the final score did not a humiliation.
Dom Smith was at Old Trafford witnessing the action…
Dean Henderson — 6
Only had 19 minutes on the pitch before injury forced his debut to end early. Will have hoped to put in a starring role against the club he left this summer, but it wasn’t to be.
Nathaniel Clyne — 6
Struggled to keep United at bay at moments on a difficult day all round.
Rob Holding — 6
Tough debut for the former Arsenal centre-back as United showed their ruthlessness.
Chris Richards — 7
Made one outstanding tackle to deny United when it was only 1-0. One of few Palace players who were not overran by the hosts.
Tyrick Mitchell — 5
Having a much better season this term than last, but not one of Palace’s better performers at Old Trafford.
Cheick Doucoure — 6
Much like Mitchell, found it almost impossible to assert himself in a match where United were so strongly the better team.
Jairo Riedewald — 6
Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat were just too mobile in midfield for Riedewald, who could not thwart their dynamism.
Jeffrey Schlupp — 5
One nice bit of skill to evade three players in the first half, but lost Casemiro for the goal as he stood hopelessly off-balance from Mason Mount’s corner.
Jesurun Rak-Sakyi — 6
Will have really wanted to impress Roy Hodgson, but the 20-year-old was a victim of quite how dominant United were. Subbed off at half-time.
Jordan Ayew — 6
Busy and industrious as always, but not his night, as was the case for all of his team-mates.
Jean-Philippe Mateta — 6
Denied twice by Andre Onana, but held the ball up well for his side.
Sam Johnstone (Henderson, 19’) — 7
Made a super save to deny Jonny Evans and another to deny Garnacho. Could do nothing about the three goals he conceded.
Marc Guehi (Rak-Sakyi, 46’) — 6
Made a couple of well-timed blocks.
Eberechi Eze (Schlupp, 60’) — 7
Tried to run the ball into the channels, but United’s defending ensured he had little luck. Should have earned an assist late on.
Will Hughes (Doucoure, 60’) — 5
Lost the ball too often after coming on.
David Ozoh (Riedewald 80’) — N/A
A good opportunity for first-team game time for the teenager. Should have scored late on.
