‘The Crown’ Trailer: First Look At Netflix’s Queen Elizabeth Drama Series

The Crown must win, must always win.” That admonition comes at the end of the first trailer for Netflix’s new original drama The Crown, which chronicles the early days of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. The show is created, written and executive produced by The Queen scribe Peter Morgan. Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) and Andy Harries (The Queen) also executive produce and Daldry directs.

The series stars Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world’s most famous monarchy as the British Empire is in decline while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister Winston Churchill (John Lithgow).

Matt Smith, Victoria Hamilton, Jared Harris, Vanessa Kirby and Eileen Atkins also star in the 10-episode series that goes behind the locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace to reveal the personal intrigues, romances and political rivalries behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.

Speaking of winning, The Crown is believed to be Netflix’s most expensive original series to date. Speaking at a Royal Television Society conference today in London, chief content officer Ted Sarandos touched on this ambitious venture. “We are looking for stuff that is more brand-defining and tentpole,” he said. “[The Crown] is produced to a scale that I don’t think many networks could step up to. Because our audience is large and global and the story is incredibly local, we can invest heavily in a project like that.”

The Crown will be available to stream November 4.
