Controversial "Fixer Upper" Barndominium Rental In Hot Water Again

From Country Living

After being shut down last October by the Lacy Lakeview City Council, the Barndominium-the infamous Texas rental home featured on Fixer Upper that was once available via HomeAway-is in the middle of a local dispute again.

Current owner and real estate investor Kristi Bass' second permit request, which would allow her to run the property as a vacation rental, was denied by the town council this week, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported. Now, the homeowner plans to find other ways to rent out the home featured on season three of the popular HGTV show.

"Unfortunately, when I'm called to a fight, I'll show up," Kristi told the Waco Tribune-Herald. "I didn't want to go this direction. I tried to give an olive branch." She did not detail her future plans, but said she still has plenty of options for the home.

Calvin Hodde, the Lacy Lakeview mayor, was the only member of the council who voted to approve the application. "I just kind of felt like it's a shame we couldn't find a common ground here," he said. "I think given a chance the Barndominium could be a really good thing. I think once everybody kind of settled down a little and it was given a chance, it would have been fine and people might meet some interesting folks."

Most council members want to uphold the zoning laws to avoid crowds of people visiting the private neighborhood. "The citizens have come forward and made it quite clear they are against it and have not wavered from that," Patrick Bell, a council member said. "I feel like we need to stick with the standard."

The converted barn was designed by Joanna Gaines and features several of her signature design elements like shiplap, reclaimed wood, and farmhouse-inspired pieces.

The homeowner will appear in court again in April to address two citations she received when she continued to run the barndominium as a rental property without the proper permit.
