Colin Firth Hints At Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle Role

Have we, or have we not seen the last of Colin Firth’s gentleman spy Harry Hart, AKA Galahad?

Firth took the lead in 2015’s secret agent action comedy ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service,’ alongside Taron Egerton as working class youngster-turned-trainee spy Eggsy – but there have been questions asked as to whether or not Firth would be back in the in-production sequel ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle.’

Caution: spoilers for ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ coming up…

It seemed reasonable to assume that Firth would not be back, as Hart was seemingly shot dead by Samuel L Jackson’s billionaire villain. However, not long after director Matthew Vaughn’s sequel began production earlier this year, hints were dropped that Firth would return after all.

Quizzed on the matter by Cinema Blend, Firth chose his words carefully:

“I’m going to do everything I can to creatively deflect your question. It’s no secret that I have some involvement with it, but I think it would be a pity to get too specific about what that is.

“I can tell you, yes, I’ve been on the set, and there is an extraordinary atmosphere where I think nothing is going to be obvious to anybody. I think Matthew Vaughn’s outrageousness and the way he likes to subvert people’s expectations, it’s very, very much alive.

“This is not a stretching out of the stuff from the first movie… I’m optimistic that it’s going to be extraordinary, and utterly its own thing.”

Given how heavily the role hinged on outrageous action (the church scene quickly became the stuff of legend), ‘Kingsman’ was far from obvious casting for the Oscar-winning ‘The King’s Speech’ actor.

The first hints that Firth would be back came from his co-star Taron Egerton, who took to Twitter back in April to share this teaser image, marked ‘A message from an old friend. #kingsman’

While plot details are thin on the ground, ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ is said to see Egerton’s Eggsy and Mark Strong’s Merlin decamp to the US to join forces with their American counterparts Statesman, when the Kingsman HQ comes under attack.

The big-name cast includes Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry, Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, and Sir Elton John.

As well as director Matthew Vaughn, screenwriter Jane Goldman is also back on board, developing the characters from the comic book which Vaughn co-created with Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons.

‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ is due to hit UK cinemas on 16 June 2017.
