Colbert Finds the Silver Lining in Report Trump Made a Troubling ‘Promise’ to a Foreign Leader (Video)

Stephen Colbert was able to find what might be the one bright spot in the unsettling report Thursday that a whistleblower in a U.S. intelligence agency filed a complaint over something Donald Trump said to a foreign leader: As if anyone could trust Trump.

According to the Washington Post, in August a U.S. intelligence official filed the formal whistleblower complaint because he was “alarmed” by a “promise” Trump made to the still-unnamed foreign leader.

“Yeah. A promise to an unknown foreign leader,” Colbert said during his “The Late Show.” monologue on Thursday’s episode. “Thank God Trump never keeps his promises.”

Colbert then noted that the inspector general overseeing U.S. intelligence agencies considered the complaint an “Urgent Concern.”

“That is high on the intelligence community threat level. It goes ‘Not a Problem,’ ‘Uh Oh,’ Urgent Concern,’ and ‘Chrissy Teigen Attack,'” Colbert joked.

Colbert then showed a screenshot of a Trump tweet denying the report by saying his phone calls with other leaders are listened in on, adding “is anybody dumb enough to believe that I would say something inappropriate with a foreign leader while on such a potentially ‘heavily populated’ call.”

“Very good point,” Colbert responded. “What kind of moron would think you would make an inappropriate offer to a foreign country while you were being recorded?” Colbert then rolled a clip of Trump’s “Russia, if you’re listening” moment from the 2016 campaign.
