"Cloverfield" series turns into trilogy with "God Particle"

28 Oct – The "Cloverfield" movies are no doubt a sneaky franchise. Thanks to J.J. Abrams' ingenious marketing tactics, he has successfully pulled a rabbit out of the hat with the self-titled first movie in 2008 and the spinoff (or "spiritual successor"), "10 Cloverfield Lane", in 2016.

According to TheWrap, Julius Onah's upcoming sci-fi thriller "God Particle" will be set as the third "Cloverfield" movie.

Like the previous two entries, J.J. Abrams is also in charge as one of the producers. The upcoming movie, which is slated for a 2017 release, revolves around a team of astronauts who find themselves fighting for their survival after making a terrifying discovery.

The movie stars David Oyelowo, Daniel Bruhl and Zhang Ziyi.

If that's not enough, Abrams and Paramount Pictures are also quietly producing more "Cloverfield"-related movies. Their target is to release a new "Cloverfield" movie each year.

As in "10 Cloverfield Lane", "God Particle" is set within the "Cloverfield" universe and does not serve as a direct sequel to the 2008 movie.

Earlier this year, "10 Cloverfield Lane" has made a stunning USD108.3 million at the worldwide box office on a tiny USD15 million budget. Prior to that, "Cloverfield" was also a successful box-office hit with a worldwide total of USD170.8 million on a modest USD25 million budget.
