Cinematographers Guild Honors Rodrigo Prieto, Dolby Labs, and David Geffner With Special Awards

DP Rodrigo Prieto (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), tech innovator Dolby Laboratories, and ICG magazine editor David Geffner received the International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) special 2016 Emerging Cinematographer Awards on Friday.

The awards were presented during the ECA opening event, held at the clubhouse of the American Society of Cinematographers in Hollywood. The 20th annual Emerging Cinematographer Awards ceremony, celebrating 20 years of launching careers, will be held tonight at the Directors Guild of America Theater.

Mexico-born Prieto, who received the Kodak Cinematography Mentor of the Year award, came to the attention of Hollywood for his cinematography on “Amores Perros” for director Alejandro González Iñárritu. His other films include “Frida,” “Brokeback Mountain,” and “Argo.” His “Silence,” for “Wolf” helmer Martin Scorsese, is set for a U.S. release in November.

In giving the award to Prieto, Kodak motion picture and entertainment president Steve Bellamy remarked that the imaging company has turned the financial corner, moving from “staggering losses to the black last year,” and that “the next generation of motion picture artists are seeking out film” as their shooting medium of choice.

Tech leader Dolby Laboratories received the Canon Award for Advancement in Digital Technology, for research into high dynamic range (HDR) standards, and for developing Dolby Vision, a technology for professional displays and cinema projectors.

Accepting on behalf of Dolby was Robert Carroll, Senior Director of Video Content Solutions, who is responsible for the products and services used in production and post-production to create Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos content.

The Technicolor William A. Fraker Cinematography Journalist of the Year Award was presented to David Geffner, executive editor of ICG Magazine, the official publication of the International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600). Geffner began covering the film and television industry in the late 1990’s as a freelance writer with a focus on independent film. Prior to that, he worked in postproduction for Paramount Pictures and The Walt Disney Company, and in story creation for Walt Disney Animation.

As previously announced, the 2016 Emerging Cinematographer honorees are Derek C. Fisher, Dan Hertzog, Eric M. Hurt, Spencer Hutchins, Alexa Ihrt, Matt Irwin, Clifford Jones, Karina Silva, John Veleta and Alejandro A. Wilkins.

The awards are being given during a time of tumultuous technical change. “The last 20 years have been as disruptive as you can get,” said ICG national president Steven Poster.
