China Box Office: ‘Odyssey’ Clings to Top in Quiet Weekend
The week following the National Day holiday was a miserable one for cinema-going in China. The box office slumped to its second lowest weekend of the year as holdovers took the top places.
Local fantasy, “A Chinese Odyssey: Part Three” narrowly held on to top spot. But its winning score for the Friday to Sunday weekend crumpled to just $5.97 million, according to figures from Chinese box office data service, Ent Group. That compares with its $37.5 million five-day opening performance a week earlier. After 10 days in theaters its cumulative score stands at $45.2 million.
Chinese romance, “Soul Mate” climbed from fifth to second spot, though its weekend score was also down. It achieved $5.34 million. After 10 days it has a $16.4 million cumulative.
Action movie “Z Storm II” (aka “S Storm”) came third with a weekend score of $4.70 million. After 10 days it has a cumulative gross of $23.6 million.
Warner Animations film “Storks” was the top new release in fourth place with $4.62 million for the weekend. It opened on Friday in sixth spot, but floated to third on Saturday and was the top film on Sunday, benefiting from the second largest number of screenings on each day.
Chinese-made “Cock and Bull” was fifth with just $3.2 million from the weekend. That topped up its 10-day score to $15.4 million.
Japanese-made animation “Chibi Maruko Chan – A Boy From Italy” (aka “Eiga Chibi Maruko-chan: Itaria Kara Kita Shounen”) placed sixth in its opening weekend. It managed $2.77 million in three days.
“Star Trek Beyond” added $1.3 million for seventh place over the weekend. That nudged its 22-day cumulative to $63.9 million.
“Nine Lives,” an English-language comedy starring Kevin Spacey that was produced by France’s EuropaCorp and China’s Fundamental Films, took eighth spot. Its $840,000 for the weekend pushed its 15-day total to $15.3 million.
Another English-language French production, StudioCanal’s “The Take” (aka “Bastille Day”) entered the Chinese chart in ninth. Released on Thursday it managed $740,000 between Friday and Sunday and $1.15 million in four days.
Shark tale “The Shallows” was tenth. It added just $150,000 over the weekend for a 15-day cumulative of $14.2 million.
