It's not every day that a home formerly owned by two of America's wealthiest families goes on the market! But one gorgeous white-washed brick estate located in Mill Neck, New York and owned by members of both the Vanderbilt and Whitney families was listed on Friday for $27,000,000. Currently known as Wychwood, this estate built in 1937 was once home to businessmen Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. Boasting a Tudor-style build, the home has undergone a major restoration effort in years past. However, it still maintains its Gilded Age charm, albeit with a few contemporary twists.

The Wall Street Journal spoke with the home's current owners, Jan Burman, who is president of Engel Burman, a developer of multifamily and assisted living communities, and his wife Renée Burman. As they told the paper, they purchased Wychwood back in 2007 for $5.5 million from Henry Luce III, who was the son of the co-founder of Time magazine. At the time, the nine-bedroom, 11-bathroom home had fallen into serious disrepair, but the Burmans were dedicated to reviving it. In fact, they spent “nearly four times” the amount of money they paid for the home just to restore it.

The couple tapped Philadelphia interior designer Bennett Weinstock to redesign the interiors in a way that tastefully paired period pieces with modern pops of color, they told WSJ. To find pieces evocative of the time, Ms. Burman and Weinstock visited the Olympia Fine Art & Antiques Fair in London, as well as a number of flea markets in Paris to search for antiques and fixtures from the '30s. However, the Burmans added some fun, contemporary elements to the home, too. They opted for some bright flamingo-colored parasols by the pool to give a Slim Aarons-approved retro vibe and dotted the grounds with modern art, including one of Robert Indiana's iconic Love sculptures.

The Wychwood manor sits on the second-highest point of elevation in Long Island, per the listing. Not only does it offer stunning waterfront views, but it boasts a handful of rich landscaped gardens and terraces, as well as a carriage house with staff quarters. This 13-acre property is perfect for entertaining on a grand scale. Mary Ellen Cashman of Compass holds the listing.
