‘Charlie’s Angels’ trailer drops proving that action films don’t need men

The first trailer for the new Charlie’s Angels reboot has landed, and it basically proves that you don’t need to fill your action flick with testosterone to generate pulse-quickening spectacle.

The trailer sets up the film’s plot, with the Angels having to protect lead programmer Elena Houghlin (Naomi Scott) who’s invented a power-source that could potentially be weaponised - the trailer is fast-paced, funny, and thrilling.

With Scott serving as the eyes of the audience, we’ll be introduced to a whole new Angels organisation, led by several Boselys (including the film’s director, Elizabeth Banks, and Captain Picard himself, Patrick Stewart).

Sabina Wilson (Kristen Stewart) is the party-focused wild card, with Jane Kano (Ella Balinska), the ex-MI6 bad-ass - they’ll both be on the frontline while we wait for Houghlin to join the team. The movie basically looks like Mission Impossible meets Men In Black International, combining globe-hopping adventures with big stunt setpieces.

“It was important to me to make a movie about women working together and supporting each other,” Banks told EW.

“And not make a movie about their romantic entanglements or their mother they don’t call enough. When I’m at work, I don’t talk about those things. I get on with my job. It felt important to do that for the Angels, to treat them with the respect their skill set demands.”

And Banks feels the time is right for a woman-led spy flick. “It’s a really exciting moment for female-driven films,” she says, citing Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel as examples of box-office successes. “Audiences are really looking for those aspirational stories about real and relatable characters, and I think the women in my movie are definitely real and relatable, but most importantly, I think they’re really fun.”

Here’s the synopsis: Elizabeth Banks directs the next generation of Angels – Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska – working for the mysterious Charles Townsend. Charlie’s Angels have always provided security and investigative skills to private clients, and now the Townsend Agency has expanded internationally, with the smartest, most fearless, most highly trained women all over the globe – multiple teams of Angels guided by multiple Bosleys taking on the toughest jobs across the world. When a young systems engineer blows the whistle on a dangerous technology, these Angels are called into action, putting their lives on the line to protect us all.

Charlie’s Angels will be in UK cinemas on 29 November.
