Chan Chun Sing To Be New Education Minister According To The Latest Cabinet Reshuffle

From being the Trade and Industry Minister, Mr Chan Chun Sing is now set to become the new Education Minister. All three Singapore 4G ministers have been given new portfolios.

The new portfolios were announced in the latest Cabinet Reshuffle on Friday (23 April). These appointments will start from 15 May, and will be set after the next Parliament sitting.

While Mr Chan Chun Sing is set to become the next Education Minister, Mr Lawrence Wong has been made the new Finance Minister. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung will be the next Health Minister.

These 4G Singapore ministers were considered the frontrunners to be the next Prime Minister, before being given their new portfolios.

Mr Chan’s previous appointment as Trade and Industry Minister is said to be given to Mr Gan Kim Yong.

Mr Heng Swee Keat will remain as Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies. He will also relinquish his portfolio as Finance Minister. A new DPM was not announced in the latest reshuffle.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, also mentioned at a press conference on the same day that the Cabinet Reshuffle will let the 4G Singapore ministers gain new experience and exposure.

“The reshuffle is also an opportunity for them to work together in new capacities so that they can understand each other better, and strengthen their cohesion as a team,” added Mr Lee, according to CNA.

The Prime Minister says Mr Chan Chun Sing has done an “excellent job” in helping get Singapore’s economy back on track. He has also helped in preparing its industries and companies in response to structural changes in the global economy.

“Now I am sending him to education, where he will build on the work of previous education ministers, to improve our education system to bring out the best in every child and student, and to develop young Singaporeans for the future,” says Mr Lee.

Mr Chan’s role as deputy chairman of the People’s Association will be relinquished. Culture, Community and Youth Minister Edwin Tong will be his replacement.

In 2011, Mr Chan Chun Sing was first elected as Member of Parliament (MP) in that year’s General Election. The 51-year-old has held various portfolios. This including:

  • Minister for Social and Family Development

  • Acting Minister for Community Development

  • Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office

Mr Chan has also experienced being the secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress between the years 2015 and 2018. It was in 2018 when he became the Trade and Industry Minister.
