Celebrities support initiative to name Eddie Garcia National Artist

24 Jun – After mourning the loss of veteran actor Eddie Garcia, many influential celebrities recently expressed support for the award-winning thespian to finally be named National Artist.

As reported on ABS-CBN, former actress and current Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos stated that she would like to co-sponsor a bill in the House of Representatives to ensure that Garcia's contribution is rewarded.

"Of course, everyone knows that Tito Eddie is an institution. [He was] involved in showbiz up to his last breath," she said.

Senator-elect Bong Revilla also supported this initiative, saying that he will push for it as "there is only one Eddie Garcia".

On the other hand, Christopher de Leon believes that Garcia should have been honoured with that title even during his life.

"Now he's up there... beyond. All the credentials are here," he said.

The same notion was shared by Richard Gomez, who said that it is still considered too late for a legend like Garcia, but an honour fit for him nonetheless.

Garcia passed away on the afternoon of 20 June, after showing minimal signs of brain activity - two weeks after he was rushed to the hospital following an on-set accident.

He was 90.
