29 Jun – Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray recently expressed her frustration over the news of the 20 Pride March participants' arrests.
The actress took to her social media accounts to express her thoughts about the incident, writing, "Is this the new normal? Earlier today a peaceful #PRIDE rally held in Manila where mask wearing participants practising social distancing were met by police in riot gear and arrested. When questioned by the witnesses and media about the reason or violations for arrest, the police gave no response."
"If proper health guidelines were being followed, (social distancing, mask wearing) why the use of force? Why the withholding of rights (witnesses said they were not read their Miranda rights before arrest nor given reason of arrest)? Videos circulating online confirm this."
Gray stressed that everybody has the right to raise their voice, adding that now is the time to speak up.
Among those who were arrested in Mendiola were members of the LGBTQ+ rights group Bahaghari. In a statement to the media, the police stated that they were being charged with Disobedience of Person in Authority in relation to Republic Act 11332, known also as the Law on Reporting of Communicable Diseases, and Batas Pambansa 880, otherwise known as Public Assembly Act.
