Cathy Tsui shares experience of visiting a Syrian refugee camp

17 May – Former actress Cathy Tsui recently revealed that she has learned a lot from her recent trip to the Syrian refugee camp in Jordan.

As reported on Mingpao, Cathy, who spoke to the media at the 100th anniversary of Hong Kong's Save the Children, shared that the camp she visited is the size of a mini city made to accommodate 80,000 refugees - half of them children.

"We live a happy life here in Hong Kong, thinking that the war is out of reach to us. But when I went to visit the camp, I could feel their pain. One of them told me that he was with his family when a plane suddenly dropped a bomb on their house. Not only did it destroy their home, but also severely injured him," she said.

Cathy revealed that most of these refugees are more than eager to return to Syria to rebuild their homes as soon as the war ends.

"I feel saddened for them. Many of these children born in the refugee camp won't get a nationality and will be unprotected. Although they can go out to work when they're older, the Jordanian government issues them papers that would only allow them to leave the camp for work and vice versa. The salary would be low too, but there's no choice. It's better than to just stay at home," she said.

Cathy revealed that the Save the Children association plans to build a child protection centre in the local area to help care for the children and give them a normal life.

"We hope to raise awareness to the public, so that they can help change the lives of these refugee children," she added.
