Casey Affleck grapples with family tragedy in first ‘Manchester by the Sea' trailer

Netflix and Amazon battle it out at the movies

Critically acclaimed since it first screened at the Sundance Film Festival early this year, moviegoers can now catch a glimpse of the upcoming Kenneth Lonergan movie in a first trailer. The film sees Casey Affleck faced with a family tragedy and its aftermath, taking him back to his past in his hometown of Manchester by the Sea.

Following the death of his brother, Boston plumber Lee Chandler returns to the small fishing town in Massachusetts where he grew up after being made legal guardian of his 16-year-old nephew, Patrick.

Since its Sundance screening in January, "Manchester by the Sea" has been showered in praise by American critics. This third movie from Kenneth Lonergan ("You Can Count On Me," "Margaret") is also due to appear at international film festivals in Toronto and New York in September, ahead of its US release in November. This kind of exposure could stand the film in good stead for 2017 Oscar nominations.

The critics aren't short of praise for the cast either, including Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams and young actor Lucas Hedges. Kyle Chandler also stars as the dead brother.

"Manchester by the Sea" is due for US release November 18.
