Cardi B has landed her first-ever high fashion campaign by becoming the new face of Balenciaga.
The WAP rapper made her debut for the Spanish fashion house in an advert for their upcoming winter campaign, featuring the 27-year-old reclining on an artificial lawn while wearing a black, asymmetrical dress.
Cardi also helped style and photograph the shoot, which took place in Los Angeles during the Covid-19 lockdown, alongside American artist Eliza Douglas.
The mother-of-one rocks a sleek black bob in the advert, and is surrounded by children's toys, with Balenciaga’s new Neo Classic handbag one of the objects scattered on the pristine green grass.
And a huge billboard featuring Cardi's debut as the new face of the fashion house has been erected outside the Louvre in Paris, where it will stand for the duration of September.
This is the first collaboration between Cardi and Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia.
“From the comfort and confinement of a familiar place, with near-limitless creative control, the stars of the Winter ’20 campaign share an emotional side of dressing alone — for one’s self, or for today’s multiple modes of staying in touch from afar,” Balenciaga said in a statement, noting Cardi's heavy involvement in the self-isolated photoshoot.
The rapper, who once included a lyric about her love for Balenciaga in the 2018 hit, I Like It, took to Instagram to share the exciting news.
“Ya lookin at the face of a @Balenciaga campaign!” she wrote. “I remember how I felt seeing myself on a billboard in NYC Times Square but PARIS! Wish I was there to see it in person!”
