Captain Marvel: Three Potential Directors Named
Since July’s San Diego Comic Con, we’ve known that Oscar-winning ‘Room’ actress Brie Larson will take the title role in ‘Captain Marvel,’ the first female superhero solo movie from the kings of the comic book movie – but a director has yet to be decided upon.
However, it seems that Marvel Studios are in the process of narrowing their search – and, while these directors may not be the only ones in contention for the job, reportedly they are definite contenders.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, three directors in the running to take the helm on ‘Captain Marvel’ include Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria.
Not the most immediately recognisable names, but with one readily apparent thing in common – their gender. As expected, Marvel are indeed determined to get a female director behind their first female solo movie (although it should be noted that 2018’s ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’ will be their first film to namecheck a female character in the title).
Caro is perhaps the biggest name of the bunch, having directed 2002’s ‘Whale Rider,’ ‘North County’ with Charlize Theron, ‘MacFarland USA,’ and the upcoming Jessica Chastain film ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife.’
Glatter, meanwhile, is an established TV director who has worked extensively on ‘Homeland,’ as well as helming episodes of such shows as ‘ER,’ ‘The West Wing’ and ‘True Blood.’
Finally, Scafaria made her name as the screenwriter of ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,’ and has since written and directed ‘Seeking a Friend for the End of the World’ with Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley, and ‘The Meddler’ with Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne.
Once again – keep in mind that there may yet be other contenders we don’t know about. However, THR do seem to rule out Jennifer Kent (‘The Babadook’) and Jennifer Yuh (‘Kung Fu Panda 2’) who were in the running earlier on. It’s also known that Ava DuVernay passed on the opportunity to direct the film.
Nicole Perlman (co-writer of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) and Meg LaFauve (‘Inside Out’) have penned the screenplay, which will see Larson’s Air Force pilot Carol Danvers gain superhuman powers after some sort of accident involving alien technology (although we’ve been told the character’s origin story will be somewhat reworked).
Let the fan speculations commence – but THR advise us not to expect a definitive announcement on the film’s director any time soon, as reportedly the studio is “being very deliberate in its search.”
‘Captain Marvel’ is scheduled to hit cinemas in March 2019.
