With hundreds of thousands set to try ‘Veganuary’ this month, several high street food chains have been stepping up their vegan offering.

Today, Greggs launched its highly-anticipated vegan steak bake - and now Caffè Nero has become the first coffee shop brand to sell vegan croissants.

As part of its new ‘Veganero’ menu, you can buy their ‘vegan raspberry croissants’ for £1.95 each.

They are made in exactly the same way as the fine butter croissants - including “the same method of folding and resting” to “guarantee a traditional flaky and buttery texture”.

However, they’ve swapped out butter for a “combination of natural oils, which give the same texture”.

It’s filled with a “tangy” raspberry jam and finished off with a raspberry sugar glaze.

Also on Nero’s new vegan menu are a vegan ‘sausage’ roll for £3.45 - inspired by their port and pancetta sausage roll, which sells at a rate of one every three seconds.

Other lunch options include a vegan ‘meatball’ panini (£4.45) and vegan mushroom, tomato and potato rosti ciabatta (£3.95).

The new dairy and meat-free range will be available in UK branches from January 8th.

According to a press release, it has been “created for those looking to reduce their meat consumption, the menu has been launched in response to a growing customer demand for delicious and vegan-friendly options that can be enjoyed at any time of the day”.

Will Stratton-Morris, CEO at Caffe Nero UK, said: “We’re committed to offering our customers more choice and the deliciously good food they deserve, whether that is an indulgent treat that hits the sweet spot or a hearty lunch.

“This menu is not only perfect for those following a vegan diet or purposely trying to reduce their meat intake, in fact, the products are such high quality that you wouldn’t know they were vegan.”

It comes as fans queued to get their hands on Greggs latest vegan launch.

The UK’s largest bakery chain is now selling the much-anticipated product for £1.55 to takeaway, or £1.85 to eat in.

It will be available in 1,300 stores from today and will hit its remaining 700 shops on 16 January.

A plant-based twist on its famous beef-filled steak bake, the new addition is made with a Quorn filling, along with diced onions and a meat-free gravy.
