SINGAPORE — Burger King is releasing a plant-based Whopper burger in Singapore from today that features a plant-based patty from The Vegetarian Butcher.

This is Burger King Singapore's first time introducing a plant-based burger, although the fast food chain has already released the Impossible Whopper in the U.S. as well as the Rebel Whopper in Europe, which also features a patty made by The Vegetarian Butcher, a meat substitute brand owned by Unilever.

The Vegetarian Butcher's meat alternative is made of soy, oil and spices, and mimics the juicy taste of real meat.

The new burger will first be available exclusively on delivery platform Deliveroo from 18 June till 21 June, though not all Burger King outlets are participating in the Deliveroo launch; but from 22 June onwards, it'll be available at all Burger King restaurants as well as on other delivery platforms.

The plant-based Whopper will cost S$6.90 a la carte at restaurants. On Deliveroo, the burger will cost S$7.90 a la carte, and a meal combo costs S$10.

However, Deliveroo is having a 1-for-1 combo deal promotion to celebrate the launch of the plant-based Whopper, which means that you'll get two meals for the price of one. This 1-for-1 deal is limited to the first 500 customers.

It's not clear how long this plant-based Whopper will be available for, as Burger King said in its press release that it would only be available while stocks last.

The meat-free Whopper is prepared in a similar way to the classic Whopper, except that the beef patty is replaced by the plant-based patty, which is also flame-grilled using Burger King's signature broiler, and served in toasted sesame buns together with sliced tomatoes, lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup, pickles, and onions.

The burger is aimed more at flexitarians – consumers who do eat meat but want to reduce their meat consumption for a more eco-friendly diet – or people who simply wish to avoid meat but are OK with some animal products. While the plant-based patty itself contains no meat, the burger may not be suitable for all vegetarians or vegans because mayonnaise contains egg, and the patties will be cooked in the same broiler as animal meat patties, which means that they may come into contact with bits of animal products.

Irene Tay, marketing director of Burger King Singapore, said, “We are very excited to finally bring the plant-based Whopper to Singapore. We received many requests from local fans who have been waiting for it to arrive at our restaurants, especially after they’ve seen the plant-based Whopper in other countries. This is the first time Burger King Singapore is introducing a plant-based burger and also one that is definitely worth the wait.”

Didier Chanove, head of marketing at Unilever Food Solutions and Asia Business Development Lead for The Vegetarian Butcher, said, “We cannot wait for everyone to try Burger King Singapore’s new plant-based Whopper! We’ve worked very closely with the Burger King team to develop the plant-based Whopper patty and to nail the iconic flame-grilled taste and experience to make sure we give diners in Singapore the chance to try the tastiest plant-based burger in town – all while being kind to the environment.”
