K-pop sensation BTS tops Twitter's latest list of the most popular artists on the social media platform.

BTS are no stranger to year-end charts, where they usually reign. And Twitter's latest list of the most popular artists on the platform is no exception. The South Korean superstars were the most tweeted-about musicians in the US in 2020, beating out Kanye West, Beyonce and Drake.

According to a recent Twitter survey, RM, Jin, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, V and Jungkook amassed the most mentions on the social media platform in 2020. It is hardly surprising as they were particularly busy last year, between the record-breaking release of their latest studio album, "BE," and the IPO of their management company, Big Hit Entertainment.

But BTS is not the only K-pop musical act that has gained in popularity on Twitter last year. ATEEZ, NCT and EXO are also featured on the social media platform's list, edging out chart-topping artists like Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Drake and Justin Bieber.

And it seems that K-pop will not stop to win over fans across the world anytime soon. Twitter had previously revealed that there were a record 6.7 billion tweets about the musical genre in 2020, marking a 10 percent increase from 2019. They came from a diverse range of markets, highlighting "the increasingly global nature of the K-pop community." Indonesia and Thailand topped the list of the countries with the most K-pop activity on Twitter, followed by South Korea, the Phillipines and the US. The social media giant also noticed a surge of interest from countries like Brazil, Spain, Turkey, France, and Saudi Arabia.

Finding the new BTS

As K-pop continues to increase its mainstream appeal, Big Hit Entertainment is expanding its strategic partnership with Universal Music Group and its Geffen Records label. The two companies have recently announced the "history making project" to assemble and debut a new global K-pop boy group together in the US.

Launching in conjunction with a US. media partner in 2022, the project will be released via a new, Los Angeles-based label created between Big Hit in partnership with UMG's Geffen Records. Although details are still scarce, the artists will "follow the K-pop system," which the companies described in a statement as "a full production that combines music, performance, fashion, music video, and communications with fans."

We're thrilled to be working together as we launch a new joint venture between our companies that will further accelerate K-pop as a global cultural phenomenon," Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman & CEO of Universal Music Group, said of the project.
