Brussels sprout flavour gin has landed and is available to buy online in the run-up to the festive season.

It may be the Christmas tipple no one ever asked for, but Pickerings Gin have seen fit to include the divisive flavour as part of their festive gin baubles collection.

The brand announced the new, six-flavour-strong line yesterday in an Instagram post shared with its 10,900 followers. The other “fabulously festive” flavours also include Festive Cranberry, Christmas Clementine, Spiced Pear and Cinnamon, Plum and Ginger and Figgy Pudding.

Unsurprisingly it is the Brussels sprout flavour which has garnered the most attention.

The cruciferous vegetable, traditionally a fixture on Christmas dinner plates, divides the nation – with some 21% saying they hated the food in a survey earlier this year (although promisingly, in a separate survey, more than six in ten said they would include Brussels sprouts in their ideal Christmas dinner).

But how will this translate into a gin flavour?

In an Instagram story pinned to the top of its account, the brand described the Brussels sprouts flavour using the phrases: “Herbaceous, savoury, distinctive, sprouty, fresh green pepper”.

Expanding further in a statement shared with Wales Online, the brand said: "This year, we fulfilled the Christmas destiny of 10,000 lonely and forgotten Perthshire sprouts by distilling them and creating the world’s first Brussels sprout gin.

"We know it sounds bonkers, but the humble sprout delivers a pleasantly sweet, slightly nutty gin, perfect for mixing."

The new gin flavour has faced a mixed reaction on social media, with some taking against the idea.

“Sprout gin, really? I love me a sprout but separate from my gin,” was one of the comments.

Responding to one follower’s somewhat sceptical comment – the user wrote “Brussel sprout flavour” with a “see no evil” monkey emoji – the brand wrote, “It's well worth a try! Makes for a surprising taste sensation!”

Other followers didn’t need convincing, with one commenting, “love sprouts”.

For those who are curious, Pickering’s festively flavoured gin baubles are available to buy now on their website for £25.

Also on the cards for Christmas 2019 is Asda’s Christmas menu, which includes green, red and white “elf” ice cream and a foot-long pig in blanket.
