Broadway Stars Belt Out ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’ At DNC

Dozens of Broadway stars and other entertainers joined in an exuberant and emotional performance of “What the World Needs Now Is Love” tonight at the Democratic National Convention.

Tony winners Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Idina Menzel, Ben Vereen and Debra Messing, as well as other entertainers such as Kristen Bell, Darren Criss, Rosie Perez and — in a little Cagney & Lacey reunion — Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless appeared onstage at Convention Hall in Philadelphia.

The Burt Bacharach-Hal David song was recorded earlier by Broadway Records to raise funds for victims of the tragic Orlando LGBT nightclub shooting. It was performed following moving speeches from victims of gun violence including former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
