Brillante Mendoza to head 2nd Malaysia Golden Global Awards jury

"Ma' Rosa" director Brillante Mendoza will lead the MGGA 2018 jury.

22 Nov – Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) has named Brillante Mendoza as its head jury for the 2nd Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA).

"We are extremely honoured that Mr. Mendoza has accepted our offer to be president of the MGGA 2018 jury," said Joanne Goh, Managing Director of MIFFest and MGGA, in a statement.

"Mr. Mendoza is a leading light of Southeast Asian cinema. His gritty, powerful socially-conscious films are proof that cinema can play a vital role in illuminating and eliminating the social ills that plague our modern societies."

The Filipino filmmaker will lead a jury panel made up of five other renowned Asian filmmakers: Tran Anh Hung (director, "Eternity"), Patrick Tam (director, "After This Our Exile"), Lee Lieh (actor, producer, "Jump Ashin!"), Suhasini Maniratnam (actor, writer, director, "Bandhana") and Malaysia's own Dain Iskandar Said (director, "Interchange").

At the inaugural MGGA held earlier this year, Mendoza took home the Best Director award through his movie "Ma' Rosa".

The rest of the jury panel members are no strangers to MIFFest and MGGA as Patrick Tam's "After This Our Exile" was one of the Special Screening selections at the first edition of the film festival, while Said's "Interchange" received three nominations at the awards ceremony.

With 'Humanity' as its main campaign theme and key message, MIFFest 2018 is set to take place from 25 February to 2 March, while the 2nd MGGA will be held on 3 March 2018.

Kim Dong Ho, founder and Honorary Festival Director of South Korea's world-renowned Busan International Film Festival, who previously served as the head jury, returns to MIFFest as the Permanent Honorary President.

Malaysian actress Angelica Lee Sinje will also continue serving as MIFFest Ambassador.
