Brie Larson Hugs Every Sexual Assault Survivor From Lady Gaga's Powerful Oscars Performance
It’s safe to say everyone was moved by Lady Gaga’s performance of her Oscar-nominated song, “Til It Happens to You.” The Golden Globe winner performed the ballad — co-written by Diane Warren for the documentary The Hunting Ground about sexual assault on college campuses — alongside a group of survivors.
The crowd at the Dolby Theatre gave 29-year-old Gaga – an assault survivor herself — an emotional standing ovation following her live rendition, but it was Best Actress winner Brie Larson who was moved to do more than just cheer.
Though you didn’t see it on TV, The Hollywood Reporter’s Chris Gardner captured video of the Room star, 26, hugging every sexual assault survivor as they walked off stage.
The topic is something close to Larson’s heart as well, as she portrayed a young mother who lived in captivity with her son in Room. She has been vocal about meeting with different trauma specialists about sexual abuse before filming.
While Lady Gaga’s performance was an Oscars highlight, the American Horror Story actress ended up losing Best Original Song to Sam Smith, who won for the James Bond theme song “Writing’s on the Wall.”

Still, Gaga was grateful to be at the show with her fiancé, Taylor Kinney. “I never thought anyone would ever love me because I felt like my body was ruined by my abuser. But he loves the survivor in me. He’s stood by me all night proud and unashamedly. THATS a real man,” she shared alongside a sweet snap of them smooching at the Academy Awards.
