'Bridge of Spies' Trailer: Steven Spielberg Sends Tom Hanks Back into Enemy Territory

The last time Steven Spielberg sent Tom Hanks into hostile European territory, it was for 1998′s Saving Private Ryan — a movie that won the director a Best Director Oscar. Now, 17 years later, Spielberg is sending his long-time buddy back into danger in the upcoming film Bridge of Spies.

The film — the first trailer for which you can watch above — features Hanks as James Donovan, a New York lawyer who’s summoned by the CIA to handle two very controversial and complicated matters at the height of the Cold War. First, in 1957, he was tasked to represent a Soviet spy in an American court of law, an exercise of constitutional rights that angered many Americans. Then, in 1962, he had to negotiate a prisoner swap with the USSR, which had imprisoned an American spy whose plane was shot down in Soviet airspace.

The historic prisoner swap took place on a bridge in East Berlin, hence the film’s title.

The first trailer displays the classic glossy glow of Spielberg’s collaborations with Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminsky (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List), resulting in a look that makes the dirty subways of New York and the frigid streets of Berlin all the more foreboding. Also ratcheting up the trailer’s tension: A ticking clock that plays throughout; Hanks yelling “Nobody is safe!”; and a senior official cautioning that “we’re in a battle for civilization.”

Bridge of Spies — which co-stars Alan Alda, Amy Ryan and Mark Rylance — hits theaters on October 16.
