Forget heels, more brides are opting to don trainers for their big day and we really kinda like it.

Queen of doing her own style thing, Serena Williams chose to stick with her familiar footwear of choice for her wedding to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian back in November.

The tennis ace opted for a blinged-up pair of Nike Cortes when she tied the knot and boy did she rock them.

“Yes I wore them down the aisle! Comfort for this bride!” the newlywed said of her jewel-encrusted sneakers.

The Insta set are also catching on that trainers over towering heels is a bridal trend worthy of the gram.

And it looks set to stay.

Speaking about the craze, style editor and presenter Ashling McCloy told Yahoo Style UK: “With trainers dominating the catwalks this season, it’s no surprise that the trend for comfort over toe-pinching heels has gradually taken off within bridal.

“Brides are ditching the sky-high Jimmy Choos and Louboutins in favour of Nike Cortes, like Serena Williams. It’s so modern and yet so retro – think nineties movie ‘The Father of the Bride’ – clearly ahead of the fash pack with those satin laced sneakers.

“For me personally, I have obviously welcomed the amped-up running shoe into my every day wardrobe, however I’d never swap the once in a life time chance to wear those proper red-carpet-worthy shoes.”

If you think about it, it’s really not that surprising that brides are choosing comfort over corns and blisters.

As much as we all love a high heel to up the glam-ante, if we’re really truthful heels aren’t actually that practical.

And, as a bride, you’ll be chalking up some serious mileage on your big day, so comfy pair of trainers will be music to your tired tootsies.

Even designers are jumping on board with this new comfier style of wedding shoe.

Earlier this year fashion brand Kate Spade teamed up with trainer brand Keds to create some bride-worthy sneakers.

From classic, white sneakers with ribbon laces to on-trend chunky slip-ons, each bridal trainer comes with a comfort factor guarantee.

What’s more, they actually look pretty darned lovely.

In other wedding news, turns out gowns with pockets are really quite the thing.

And there is now a genius wedding weather calculator that can predict if you’ll have to swap your shiny new bridal sneakers for some wet-weather wellies.
