Brazil, UK Lead Pack For International Emmy Nominations

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences unveiled this year’s nominations on Monday, with Brazil leading the pack with seven nominations, including a best actor nod for Globo TV’s Rules of the Game (Alexandre Nero) and a best actress nod for Grazi Massafera in Hidden Truths. Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench received nominations for their roles in BBC One’s TV movie Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot, based on the famous author’s children’s novel about a lonely older man who tries to win the affection of his neighbor who is only interested in her pet tortoise. The Weinstein Company has all U.S. rights to the title (except theatrical). Hoffman and Dench’s nominations helped put the UK tally at six this year. The country’s hit reality series Gogglebox was also nominated in the non-scripted entertainment category.

Five nominations went to Germany including best TV movie/miniseries and best actor (Florian Stetter) for Naked Among Wolves, an adaptation of Bruno Apitz’s novel about prisoners in a concentration camp who risk their lives to hide a Polish-Jewish boy. RTL Television and UFA Fiction’s Deutschland 83, earned a nod in the best drama series category. The German hit world premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015 and has sold around the world, with the Sundance Channel taking U.S. rights.

South Korea picked up three nominations in the documentary, non-scripted entertainment and TV movie/miniseries categories while Canada also knocked up three noms. Argentina, the Philippines and France got two nominations each. France’s Dix Pour Cent (Call My Agent) was up for best comedy. The show is created by former mega-agent Dominique Besnehard and was a big success for channel France 3.

The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said that 40 nominees from 15 categories would be competing in the 10 categories, which honor programs outside of the U.S. The ceremony will be presented by Alan Cumming on November 21 at the Hilton New York Hotel.

Shonda Rhimes, the prolific writer, creator and exec producer behind global hits such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Private Practice and How to Get Away with Murder, will be presented with the honorary International Emmy Founders Award. Maria Rorbye Ronn, CEO and director general of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, will receive the honorary International Emmy Directorate Award.
