Much has been said about Bran Stark. He's a weirdo little teen who got too into CBD. But, he's also the key to humans defeating the Night King, what with the whole being able to see into the past thing.

But, up until the second episode of Game of Thrones Season Eight, fans have never really gotten an idea of what exactly it means to be the Three-Eyed Raven (other than, you know, whatever it is Bran does).

And as the humans are discussing their battle strategy for the big battle of Winterfell to come, Bran (slightly) explains what the hell is going on. During the conversation, Jon says that the Night King will "never expose himself."

Then Bran chimes in.

"Yes he will he'll come for me. He's tried before many times with many Three-Eyed Ravens," Bran says.

Okay my dude, that's strange. Thankfully dear sweet Samwell Tarly asks the next logical follow-up question: "What does he want?" To which Bran responds: "An endless night. He wants to erase this world and I am its memory."

So, that's definitely a thing. As we know, Bran can look into the entirety of human history. But, let's now consider the recent interview Entertainment Weekly ran with Night King actor Vladimir Furdik. In the interview, he said his character "has a target he wants to kill, and you will find out who that is. There’s also that moment [in “Hardhome”] when Jon Snow was on the boat and the Night King looked at him and raised his arms-there’s a similar and even stronger moment between Jon and the Night King this time."

Now, it seems that the Night King absolutely wants to kill Bran, and they do have a connection, as he notes in this scene about the mark on his arm. Their plan, I should point out, is to just park Bran in the Godswood and wait for the Night King to get there. Should go well! But the new information we learn here is that all of this has apparently happened before. The Night King has tried to kill the Three-Eyed Raven, who knows the entirety of human history.

We don't know why, though. A thought could be that the Night King is trying to erase all of humans and the memory of all humans, because he was created to do just this by the Children of the Forest. As we know, the Children of the Forest created the White Walkers thousands of years ago to protect themselves in a war against the First Men. Unfortunately, the Children of the Forest lost control of the White Walkers who threatened to destroy every living thing. During the War Before the Dawn, the people of Westeros, alongside the Children of the Forest rallied to drive the White Walkers back and Bran the Builder constructed the wall to keep them at bay.

So, if we merge two theories, is it possible that the White Walkers were trying to kill Bran the Builder before the wall? And Bran has actually been every iteration of his namesake?

Hopefully we'll know the truth before everyone dies in Episode Three.
