The Hollywood rumor mill can get out of hand, which is why we’re glad Brad Pitt is opening up about his divorce for the first time. Because it’s always better to get information first-hand — for everyone.

The golden Hollywood couple called it quits back in September 2016, and since then, headlines have been ablaze with rumors on the high-profile divorce. But Brad just opened up to GQ Style to set part of the story straight, and revealed how quitting alcohol and attending therapy has helped him cope.

“I was boozing too much,” he told GQ Style in his cover shoot interview. “It’s just become a problem. And I’m really happy it’s been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I’ve got my feelings in my fingertips again.”

“Truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good… [I] don’t want to live that way anymore.”

Following the divorce fallout, The Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services and the FBI were both called to investigate allegations of Brad getting “verbally abusive” and “physical” with his son, Maddox. No charges were filed, but it still sounds as though the actor needed some time to work on himself.

Since the initial split announcement and investigation, Brad and Angelina have put up a united front about dissolving their marriage. The two are putting their kids first.

Regarding tabloid speculation, Brad told the magazine, “I worry about it more for my kids, being subjected to it, and their friends getting ideas from it. And of course it’s not done with any kind of delicacy or insight — it’s done to sell. And so you know the most sensational sells, and that’s what they’ll be subjected to, and that pains me.”

“I was really on my back and chained to a system when Child Services was called. And you know, after that, we’ve been able to work together to sort this out,” Pitt told GQ Style.

“We’re both doing our best. I heard one lawyer say, ‘No one wins in court — it’s just a matter of who gets hurt worse.’ And it seems to be true, you spend a year just focused on building a case to prove your point and why you’re right and why they’re wrong, and it’s just an investment in vitriolic hatred. I just refuse. And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It’s just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart.”

While this time has no doubt been extremely painful, it’s helped Brad gain clarity and perspective about how he chooses to parent his kids.

“People on their deathbeds don’t talk about what they obtained or were awarded. They talk about their loved ones or their regrets,” he told GQ Style.

“I say that as someone who’s let the work take me away. Kids are so delicate. They absorb everything. They need to have their hand held and things explained. They need to be listened to. When I get in that busy work mode, I’m not hearing. I want to be better at that.”
