She might promote active living and healthy eating, but American celebrity fitness and social media influencer Cassey Ho – better known as blogilates – is unabashed about her fondness for Singapore’s famous chilli crab.

“Last year [when I was in Singapore] I had chili crab with man tou. It was so good. I’m going to have it the first thing after my photo shoot… I’m going to have pepper crab, and chilli crab all night long!” she said.

Ho is currently in Singapore to headline FitnessFest 2017, and will be conducting workout sessions at the Main Stage Arena on 20 and 21 May 2017.

The 30-year-old fitness entrepreneur, who has over 6.5 million subscribers across her social media platforms, also announced several projects in the works, including a new app as well as a podcast series to promote female empowerment.

“We’re going to invite a lot of entrepreneurial women, a lot of female leaders to show girls that you don’t have to fit inside a box and that you don’t have to be timid about being a leader,” said Ho.

“Who cares if somebody calls you bossy? You do you, and I want girls to know that there’s so much out there that they can do that may not be mainstream. Live your own life and follow your dreams.”

Pressure from Asian parents

As one of the few Asian social media influencers with an international audience, this is something that Ho has personally struggled with.

In particular, she has had to contend with parental pressure for her to go into “mainstream” occupations that can provide financial stability instead of following her passion – something she thinks many other Asians experience.

“My parents wanted me to be a doctor and my sister to be a lawyer. We did not do that, but we both found success and happiness in different ways. A lot of Asian people are very obedient like I was, we want to make our family happy,” she said.

“People need to step up and go into fields that their parents are scared for them to go into, because they’re scared that their children not going to be successful,” Ho continued, “The more we can step out of our comfort zone, the better it’ll be.”

Ho started blogilates in 2009, when she moved from Los Angeles to Boston. While working as a part-time pilates instructor in Los Angeles, Ho posted pilates videos on her YouTube channel in order for her students to keep up with their work-out after she moved, and soon began receiving requests for videos targeting specific muscle groups.

In 2014, blogilates was reported to be the top fitness channel on YouTube, averaging about eight million views per video.
