Original ‘Blade Runner’ star Edward James Olmos has confirmed he’s returning for the sequel ‘Blade Runner 2049’, having filmed a single scene.

The actor who played Gaff, the Cityspeak-spouting, origami-making vice cop who tracks Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard to a noodle bar, revealed the news during an interview with The Trend Talk Show.

“I signed a seven page non-disclosure contract. I did, my manager did, my agent did, everybody did,” Olmos told host Bel Hernandez, “I couldn’t talk about it. I couldn’t talk about it to anybody about it. Guess what? This is the first time that I’m telling the whole world, that yes, I am going to be Gaff in ‘Blade Runner 2049’.”

Despite appearing in just a handful of scenes in Ridley Scott’s 1982 original, the colourfully dressed Gaff made a lasting impression, and Olmos added that his appearance in Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited sequel would be even briefer.

“Well it’s not about Gaff, but it’s about someone who is going to try to find out certain things about us back then. My role is like it was in the original – that time I only had four scenes, in this I only have one. But again, it’s a poignant little scene.”

The first ‘Blade Runner 2049’ teaser trailer showed Ryan Gosling’s Officer K tracking down Ford’s Deckard, so it’s probably safe to assume he also calls in on Gaff while searching for the retired blade runner.

Harrison Ford stars alongside Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Mackenzie Davis, and Dave Bautista in the sequel which hits cinemas 6 October.
