"Birds of Prey 2" cancellation is probably no surprise, even to Margot Robbie.

7 Jul – While Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn successfully wormed her way into fans' hearts after debuting in 2016's "Suicide Squad", this did not guarantee box office success for her solo vehicle "Birds of Prey".

The standalone movie, which also goes by the mouthful "Birds Of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn", was expected to kick off a Harley Quinn-led franchise but if recent rumours are to be believed, this is no longer the case.

Reports from Giant Freakin Robot and We Got This Covered claimed that the planned sequel for "Birds of Prey" has been cancelled.

Despite Harley Quinn's popularity among fans and the movie's positive reviews from critics, the axing of the second instalment is probably no surprise, considering its fate has always been tied to the first movie's box office success.

Producer Sue Kroll said as much prior to the Margot Robbie-starrer's release earlier this year. Poor box office performance will mean no "Birds of Prey 2" and unfortunately, the first movie barely made USD20 million at the box office, not even making back its estimated USD82-100 million budget.

Despite its strong cast, "Birds of Prey" failed to take flight at the box office.

Part of the reason could be because during its theatrical release, most moviegoers were already wary of visiting cinemas due to the pandemic.

Even worse, cinemas begun temporarily shuttering to curb the coronavirus spread. In the end, "Birds of Prey" had to cut its theatrical run short and was later given an early release on digital platforms at the end of April.

But fret not, fans, Robbie will still be reprising the role in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" next year, despite early reports stating she wouldn't be. The actress will also be portraying other iconic characters on the big screen next, including Barbie and Maid Marian.

Plus, fans who liked the team up between Robbie and "Birds of Prey" writer Christina Hodson will still see the duo working together again, as they have both recently inked a deal with Disney to lead and write, respectively, a new "Pirates of The Caribbean" reboot.
