16 Jul - The Sandra Bullock-led "Bird Box" was one of the more successful movies of 2018, even sparking a blindfold challenge similar to what a majority of the characters experienced in the movies.

Time will tell what kind of challenge the sequel will spark after its release, as according to recent reports, the second movie is now being developed by Netflix.

Writer Josh Malerman, who penned the 2014 post-apocalyptic novel the first movie was based on, told Inverse that Netflix is already working on the sequel ahead of his follow-up novel's release.

The upcoming novel, "Malorie", is set for release this 21 July.

"'Malorie' opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends," said Malerman. "Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that."

"I can't say much, but I can say that it is in development... Sometimes it's weird, all this secrecy, but I'm game," he added, talking about the movie's sequel.

Judging by the second book's title, the Oscar-winning Bullock will reprise her role as Malorie. In the previous movie, she was joined by the likes of John Malkovich, Sarah Paulson, Lil Rel Howery and rapper Machine Gun Kelly.

A second movie is probably no surprise considering the hype surrounding the first movie following its worldwide release in December 2018. Netflix reported that almost 26 million people watched "Bird Box" in its first week alone.
