Bird Box novelist Josh Malerman has confirmed that a sequel to the post-apocalyptic horror thriller is currently in development over at Netflix.

Malerman made this admission during his recent interview with Inverse to promote Malorie, the hugely anticipated sequel to his 2014 novel Bird Box, which unsurprisingly lead to questions about whether it would be adapted by Netflix.

"I can't say much, but I can say that it is in development. Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I'm game,” was Malerman’s response.

Thankfully for readers, Malorie will be available on July 21, so they’ll be able to find out what happened to Sandra Bullock’s titular character after the events of Bird Box.

Malerman confirmed that Malorie starts exactly where the original book and movie finished, explaining, "Malorie opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends. Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that."

Malerman was inspired to write Malorie after Bird Box was released onto Netflix in December, 2018, where it quickly became a huge smash-hit for the streaming service. But Malerman insists that the success of Bird Box had absolutely no impact on his approach to the novel or the writing process.

"It took about the same amount of time. I was also aware that there was a possibility that Sandra Bullock wouldn't be playing Malorie. When you first start writing novels, especially now, how do you not see them cinematically? We grew up on movies.”

“So with Bird Box, I always saw it cinematically. It almost reads like stage directions. It felt the same writing Malorie, but I didn't have Sandra Bullock in mind when I wrote the first one."
