Bill Maher Has A Truly Terrible Take on Stan Lee’s Legacy
Being a dick is integral to Bill Maher’s brand, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that he conjured up a truly contrarian take in response to the news of Stan Lee’s death. According to Maher, we shouldn’t mourn Lee because comics are for kids and adults who like them are the reason for Trump’s election.
"The guy who created Spider-Man and the Hulk has died, and America is in mourning. Deep, deep mourning for a man who inspired millions to, I don’t know, watch a movie, I guess," wrote Maher on his blog:
Now, I have nothing against comic books – I read them now and then when I was a kid and I was all out of Hardy Boys. But the assumption everyone had back then, both the adults and the kids, was that comics were for kids, and when you grew up you moved on to big-boy books without the pictures.
His "back-in-my-day" tirade led to a predictable conclusion. "I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to suggest that Donald Trump could only get elected in a country that thinks comic books are important," finished Maher. He completely ignores the fact that comic books and graphic novels are respected artistic mediums-a graphic novel was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize just this year.
In the annals of Maher's many failures to self-edit, this one certainly falls somewhere shy of that time he used the n-word on his show, when he hosted a friendly chat with Milo Yiannopoulis, or when he compared One Direction’s Zayn Malik to the Boston marathon bomber. But Stan Lee literally died on Monday-Maher couldn’t wait until at least a couple days after the funeral to blame the man for the Trump election?
