Popular South Korean artiste T.O.P, who is currently hospitalised for a drug overdose, is set to head to court on 29 June for a hearing. The singer and actor from boy group BIGBANG had been charged for the illegal consumption of marijuana in October 2016.

According to KBS News on Wednesday (7 June), South Korea’s Seoul Central Court announced that T.O.P’s first court hearing by head judge Kim Ji-chul will take place at 11.30am Korea time.

The 29-year-old rapper was charged and subsequently expelled by the military on Monday (5 June), just over three months after he was enlisted.

The announcement of the court hearing came a few hours after a media briefing was held at the hospital about T.O.P’s health condition.

T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, was admitted into the intensive care unit (ICU) of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital on Tuesday (6 June). He was later discovered to have ingested a high dose of benzodiazepine.

Doctors at the hospital said that while he is still not fully conscious, his condition is improving slowly.

KBS News also reported that T.O.P’s court hearing date will change depending on the status of his health.

T.O.P reportedly smoked marijuana with a 22-year-old female trainee, Han Seo-hee, on three occasions at his home between 9 and 12 October 2016.

If he is found guilty in court, he could face up to five years in prison, or a fine of up to 50 million won (S$61,400).

If his trial ends in anything other than imprisonment, he will have to re-enlist in the army.
