Beyonce Brings Mothers of the Movement to VMAs
Angel wings weren’t all that Beyonce brought to the Video Music Awards red carpet on Sunday night.
The superstar arrived at the MTV awards show with four women who lost their sons to gun violence, and the faces of Mothers of the Movement. Gwen Carr, Lezley McSpadden, Sybrina Fulton and Wanda Johnson — the mothers of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin and Oscar Grant, respectively — stood next to Beyonce outside the Madison Square Garden.
It’s not the first time the women have appeared with Beyonce. Beyonce, who has been outspoken about gun violence and police brutality, featured Carr, McSpadden and Fulton in her music video for “Lemonade,” where they formed a powerful image in holding framed photos of their slain sons in the politically charged production.
The four women recently appeared at the Democratic National Convention, and have all endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. Speaking at the DNC about the 2012 death of her son, Fulton said, “I am an unwilling participant in this movement. I would not have signed up for this. None of us would have.”
Beyonce recently penned an open letter about the shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, urging readers to take action by contacting their local congresspeople.
