If you’re anything like us your bathroom cabinet will be filled with various lotions and potions, which claim to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots, and leave us with a glowing complexion.

While there is nothing we want more than flawlessly radiant skin, it can be difficult to achieve when our time spent outdoors in the sunshine is limited.

But that’s not to say we can’t achieve a natural glow - this is where vitamin C comes in.

While some may be getting their daily doses of vitamin C from sitting in the sunshine, through their diet, it can also be absorbed through our skin using creams or serums enriched with the ingredient.

The fashion, beauty and home inspiration app LIKEtoKNOW.it has seen a 1200% rise in searched for vitamin C beauty serums as consumers are eagerly trying to find solutions to keep their skin healthy, hydrated and bright.

Why is vitamin C such an important ingredient in our skincare?

Vitamin C is essential because the acidic agent helps to remove dead skin cells, which leaves your face looking brighter, it also targets discolouration, pigmentation, early signs of ageing, and protects from the elements too.

Co-founders of skin consultancy Lion/ne, Megan Fenton and Ksenia Selivanova, discuss the benefits of the ingredient in beauty products.

Fenton told us: “Vitamin C is another wonderful ingredient to stimulate collagen production and reduce the signs of sun damage on the skin.

“This antioxidant can also can help to manage overflow of oil, so it is an unsung hero for those with oily skin types.

“There are many different types of Vitamin C and it is important to remember that this is an ACTIVE ingredient. If you feel the skin burning or tingling, then your Vitamin C may be too strong for you, and it might be worth looking into an antioxidant blend or booster that you mix into another serum or moisturiser as a buffer.

“I recommend using an SPF with this ingredient as it boosts your skin’s resilience to free radicals caused by UV light.”

Selivanova added: “Vitamin C acts like a guard that protects your skin from pollution, unwanted substances and also helps to enhance your skin’s resilience to UV light. I really see it as a warrior.

“It can take different forms, so depending on your skin type, you can always find the right match! Personally, Ascorbic Acid is way too intense for my skin, so I prefer to use other forms such as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.”

Fenton and Selivanova have shared their recommended vitamin C serums to use, which are suitable for all skin types and budgets.
