A soak in the tub at the end of a long day is a great way to relax and unwind – a glass of wine optional!

But rather than simply pouring in your go-to bubble bath or fragrant bath oil, why not pop in some bath salts instead? Bath salts can help to soothe tired and aching muscles, are naturally cleansing, and are great for use after playing sport or exercising.

“A detoxifying bath is a good habit to get into,” Karen Davis, Westlab’s pharmacist and salt specialist, told us. “Research has shown that when it comes to health, prevention is far better than a cure, so the current focus in many experts’ work is encouraging wellbeing in order to avoid the long-term harm that being under stress or eating poorly can lead to. Although our bodies have their own detoxifying processes in place, bathing with a pure mineral salt can really help rid the body of toxins and move the process along.”

Karen recommends checking out Westlab’s Soothing Dead Sea Salt, which can be used on skin prone to eczema, acne or psoriasis, as well as the limited-edition Pink Gin bathing salts, which contain a festive blend of juniper berry, pomegranate, and lime.

Other popular options on the market include French Girl’s Rose Sea Soak, which is made with six salt varieties and infused with the delicate scent of rose and ylang ylang, or This Works’ Deep Sleep Bath Soak, which features a delightful combination of lavender, vetivert, and chamomile.

Meanwhile, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Beauty now offers the Nurse! Under the Weather Bath Soak, containing mustard powder, manuka, and eucalyptus, with brand reps claiming the combination “fights off misery” when you’re sick.

But if you’re not sure where to start, perhaps seek out a product contain Himalayan salt.

“Bathing in a high-grade Himalayan salt is an excellent way to help detox the body – this is due to the sulfate in the salt. Sulfate helps to break down and remove toxins as well as process certain chemicals,” explained Karen. “The mineral-rich salt can boost the metabolism of cells within the body, which can really help to purify and cleanse after periods of overindulgence or illness.”
