Benedict Cumberbatch has a brand new TV show that “Sherlock” fans are going to die for
Though nothing beats his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, we’re still pretty psyched that Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing Patrick Melrose on Showtime’s…well,Melrose.
Because based on the description — he’s “an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy” who turns to drug abuse to erase bad childhood memories of his father — the character sounds like Holmes but with more friends and fewer deadly mysteries to solve, and is pretty much right up Cumberbatch’s alley.
Melrose, a five-part limited drama series, is based on a series of novels by Edward St. Aubyn. Each episode will cover “a few intense days” in Patrick’s life, with the time frame spanning the south of France in the 1960s, New York in the 1980s, and London in the early 2000s. (So basically, get ready for a whole lot of fun with makeup.)
It will shoot in New York and France, with Cumberbatch also signed on as an executive producer.
“We are delighted to be part of this incredible series,” wrote Cumberbatch and Adam Ackland, his production partner, in a statement sent to Variety. “We have been huge fans of these books for many years and David Nicholls’ adaptations are extraordinary.”
We’re not quite sure what this means for Sherlock exactly, but Cumberbatch signing on to star and produce such a big project obviously isn’t great news for fans who were hoping to see a fifth series as soon as possible. Cumberbatch has alluded to the series possibly being finished in interviews, but no official announcements have been made.
