Singaporean actress and host Belinda Lee is bringing her love for travel and ‘celebration of the human spirit’ back on TV screens with not one, but two travelogues out in June this year. One, titled “In Between Worlds”, seeks to explore how different ethnic groups all over the world identify themselves within a particular country.

Her first stop will be in Okinawa, Japan, where she will meet the Ryukyuans, the indigenous people of the Ryukyu islands, which Okinawa is a part of. Her other travelogue, titled “National Dishes”, will have her exploring the national dishes of different countries such as Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea and Vietnam.

Lee admits that working on two travel shows simultaneously is making her “a little bit swamped”, but adds, “It’s going to be very interesting and I’m looking forward to doing more of such human stories and celebrating the human spirit as well.”

Childhood dreams

The 39-year-old, who was recently roped in as one of the faces of jewellery brand Pandora’s DO campaign, didn’t always want to be an actress and a host. In fact, Lee said her first childhood dream was to be a jewellery designer.

In an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore, she said, “Nobody really knows that I always wanted to be a jewellery designer. It’s not like I can draw or sketch, I don’t know why I wanted to be one either. But I really like vintage jewellery, especially those with sentimental value or history.”

She shared about a pair of jade and diamond earrings that her late mother handed down to her for her wedding dowry, which she wore while filming a Mother’s Day programme recently.

Calling her mother her role model, Lee said, “My mum was poor, but she had such a kind and generous heart. Now, when I travel around the world and see people suffering in pain, I always wonder what I can do to make them feel better too.”

“I always believe that it doesn’t matter where you are or who you are, what matters is the little effort you make to do a little more for yourself and somebody else.”
