SINGAPORE – So Amazon Singapore did the unthinkable and allowed a bunch of reporters into their fulfilment centre, a total of 170,000 square feet at Mapletree Logistics Hub - Toh Guan in the Jurong East area. Like a curious bunch, we followed Henry Low, Country Manager of Amazon Singapore on a guided tour, where we observe how goods from third-party sellers enter the centre, to the last step of shipping to customers.

New fulfilment centre for Amazon.sg

To support the launch of Amazon.sg, Amazon has expanded its fulfilment capacity in Singapore, adding a new fulfilment centre (FC) to cater to the wide selection and fast fulfilment of customer orders. The 170,000 square-feet FC with more than 200,000 cubic feet of storage space, will house hundreds of thousands of products and will help Amazon ensure that all packages are picked, packed and shipped throughout the holiday season.

Supporting small and medium businesses (SMB)

Customers can shop from homegrown and SMB like X-Mini, ECOVACS, Mother Made, and more on Amazon.sg. In 2018, small and medium businesses selling in Amazon’s stores have created an estimated 1.6 million jobs worldwide. Amazon partners with SMB to allow them to store their products in the fulfilment centre, while the delivery of the products, customer service and returns are taken care of by Amazon.

Looking at the centre, it feels and operates like a giant robot, without frantic. Most of the processes are streamlined, but at the end of the day, a person’s touch and brains are much needed to make the right call. But being a tech giant, Amazon has the calls to deploy algorithmic intelligence to continue to operate at peak speed.
