Behind the scenes of K-drama Coffee Prince's Malaysian remake

It has been more than ten years since the K-drama “The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince” first aired in South Korea, introducing an entire generation around the world to actor Gong Yoo.

Since then, he has grown to become a global personality, with shows such as “Train to Busan” and “Goblin” adding to his star power in 2016, so it comes as no surprise that his older work is now being reworked for a new generation.

Near the end of this year, Malaysia will be getting it’s own remake of the highly successful drama, titled “My Coffee Prince”. Taking over the original characters played by Yoon Eun-hye and Gong Yoo are Malaysian actress Jannah Nick and heartthrob Fattah Amin, whose casting was initially criticised by fans in Malaysia.

Some scenes have also come under fire, such as this particular scene, where the two leading stars pretend to kiss. It was shared by a staff on an Instagram story and immediately caused a stir among netizens in Malaysia.

According to the New Straits Times, netizens commented that while they wanted the adaptation to stay as faithful as possible to the original drama, they felt that certain scenes should be changed to accommodate cultural sensitivities in the country.

The story is based on a novel by Lee Sun-mi about the heir to a coffee empire (played by Gong Yoo originally), and his relationship with a tomboyish woman (Yoon), who he initially thinks is a guy.
