BBC2 Orders Revenge Drama ‘Paula’; Eccho Moves Into ‘Casa Del Mar’ – Global Briefs
BBC Two has ordered revenge thriller Paula from playwright/filmmaker Conor McPherson. Denise Gough (Jimmy’s Hall, Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories) will star with Victoria’s Tom Hughes in the three-part drama. This is McPherson’s first original TV series. He won an Olivier Award for The Weir and a New York Drama Critics Circle prize for best play with The Night Alive. His feature credits include penning the next film from Wadjda director Haifaa Al-Mansour, A Storm In The Stars. Paula centers on the fallout in a young chemistry teacher’s life after her one-night stand with a good-looking but dangerous man. BBC NI Drama and Cuba Pictures are producing with shooting to begin next month in Belfast.
Eccho Rights has boarded worldwide distribution for International Emmy Award nominee La Casa Del Mar. One of the four finalists in the drama category, the Argentine crime thriller was created by Juan Laplace who suffered a sudden death during a soccer game last July. The series is produced by DirecTV Latin America’s OnDirecTV, in association with Storylab and Cisne Films. The first season was four episodes with the series renewed for another eight-part second season the same year. Eccho is handling all 12 episodes.
Studiocanal has set its Mipcom slate for next month with a pair of Nordic noirs including Midnight Sun, a Swedish-French drama for Canal Plus and SVT. Created by Bron/Broen (The Bridge) writers Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, it’s set in a remote mining community where a series of brutal murders conceals a secret conspiracy. Based on an idea by Henrik Jansson-Schweizer and Patrick Nebout, it stars Leïla Bekhti (The Prophet) and Gustaf Hammarsten (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), and is produced by Atlantique Productions and Nice Drama. Also added to the slate are SAM Productions‘ Below The Surface, a crime thriller for Denmark’s Kanal 5. Set in a subway train beneath Copenhagen, the action kicks off when 15 innocent people are taken hostage by three masked and armed men. A terror taskforce is dispatched to rescue them, while reporter acts as go-between with the police. Kasper Barfoed is creator and head writer. Creative producers are Søren Sveistrup (The Killing) and Adam Price (Borgen) with A Royal Affair’s Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen exec producing. Also on offer from Studiocanal are ITV/Netflix drama Paranoid from RED Production Company and Crazyhead, a comedy/horror series from Howard Overman for Channel 4 in association with Netflix.
