Baratunde Thurston Puts the Disastrous Republican Response to COVID Into Perspective
Last week, comedian, writer, and critic Baratunde Thurston led off our new video series, “The Soap Box,” delivering some much-needed insights on American politics and culture. (In case, you know, the talking heads have you fatigued by now.) He delivered some much, much-needed pre-election optimism, and now?
For the second episode of “The Soap Box,” Thurston took aim at our political leaders for (mis)handling the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, the Republican-heavy Senate that has been holding up the House of Representatives’ massive COVID-19 relief bill. (Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, if you missed it, wants to wait until after the election to pass this damn thing.)
“This is what’s held us up?” Thurston asks. “Because you don’t want to help your fellow American. ‘Cause they vote differently than you. You can’t reopen an economy when the virus is spreading as wildly as it is. You can’t reopen an economy when your healthcare system has been overrun by the virus.”
Aside from all that, Thurston likens Jack Dorsey’s quarantine beard to Luke Skywalker’s facial hair situation, which is, well, great. But let’s wrap this up with the big stuff. In the rest of the video, Thurston (who just voted, hell yeah) outlines what might happen when Biden or Trump wins the presidency. Biden? Drinks and a 48-hour-long nap? Trump? Well... we’ll let Thurston say it.”
“If this president maintains his power legitimately or illegitimately, if he maintains his power either way… we got work to do,” he says. “We got work to do. And the work becomes even more clear.”
