The Balmuda Coffee Machine Makes the Perfect DripHearst Owned

We live in a day and age where most people have a coffee machine in their home. If you're a coffee drinker, there's a good chance that, somewhere on your kitchen counter, there's either a pod machine, or a drip coffee machine, or maybe even a fancy, bells-and-whistles machine with a steamer and espresso grinder and everything. Whatever coffee machine you have, though—clear some counter space, put it in a cupboard if you have to. You're going to want Balmuda's Brew.

Let me start by saying this: when I say "clear some counter space," I mean a few inches. The Japanese company has always specialized in producing sleek, smart objects (you may know their speakers, lanterns, or toasters) that take up as little space as possible in an urban home, and the coffee machine that launched today is no different. It's tiny and shiny and minimalist, so it goes with whatever appliances you already have and barely calls attention to itself.

Aside from being good looking, The Brew is very high functioning. It's almost ridiculously easy to use, but brews a mean cup of drip coffee, from sizes ranging between small, medium, and large, and options to brew a carafe that's iced, regular, or strong. There are so few buttons on top of the machine that it's impossible to brew the wrong way: you simply put your coffee grounds into a filter, place the pot below, and in four to seven minutes, you're good to go.

I drink a lot of coffee, and can I just say, there's nothing worse than paying for a grande Americano only for it to taste burnt or stale. Sorry, Starbucks, but it's true. That's why Balmuda's Brew is replacing my $8 morning coffee—it has temperature-controlled technology that makes it impossible for the coffee to oversteep, or the water to over boil. Every cup is just right, brewed at an optimal 187 degrees to give the coffee a clear, strong aftertaste without any of the bitterness or acidity that comes from higher temperatures—"bypass pouring," as Balmuda calls it.

As compact as this machine is, it's hard to believe it's full of super high tech inside, including a double water spout feature that allows the coffee to be at the perfect temperature to achieve a smooth finish.

I'd never even used a drip coffee machine with filters before trying this out, and I got the hang of it immediately. In the time it takes me to wait for Starbucks, I have a perfect cup of coffee right at home. It looks like I'm going to be my own barista from now on.
